Essay

A character who is dynamic is a character that changes throughout the story.  A dynamic character from this book is Jean Valjean.  This character changes throughout the book because he goes to jail because he stole a loaf of bread for his sister's children, he got the silver place from the bishop, and he stole the coin from a little boy.
Jean Valjean is a dynamic character in this story because he was arrested and sent to jail for stealing a loaf of bread.  He wanted to help his sister because she didn't have a job or food to help her with her children.  He decided to go to the bakery to steal a loaf of bread for his family.  In page 83, and 84 it states that," One Sunday night, the bakery on the Place d l'Eglise was close by.  He punched with his fist against the glass.  The arm seized one loaf of bread and took it."  This means to me that Jean Valjean really cares about his family and doesn't want to let them die of starvness.
Another example on why Jean Valjean is a dynamic character is that he stole the silver place from the bishop.  The silver sets really obsessed him.  He needed the silver sets in order to sell them and get money from it.  In page 98 it states that," With the big serving spoon, they would bring at least two hundred francs, double what he had made nineteen years ' labor,"  This means to me that selling a silver serving spoon can help him get more money in order to have a job or shelter.
A last example of why Jean Valjean is a dynamic character in this story is because he kept a coin from a little boy.  He saw a little boy coming towards him and flipping a coin in his hand.  In page 107, it states that," Jean Valjean put his foot on it.  The boy, however, had followed the piece with his eye and had seen where it went."  This means to me that Jean Valjean didn't want to give the coin back to the little boy because in his mind he was saying that he needed those forty-sous.  After, the boy left crying because he didn't get his coin back.  Later, he has noticed what he had become.
Clearly, a dynamic character in the book Les Miserables is Jean Valjean.   He changed in many ways.  Later on in the story he states noticing what he has turned into.  He will regret everything he has done.  He has become a criminal person.
