Hugo focuses on the symbolic significance of the convent because on page 509, it states that, " The convent, which is common to the East as well to the West, to ancient as well as modern times, to Paganism as well as to Buddhism, to Islam as well as to Christianity, is one of the optical appliances man turns on the Infinite." His tone towards the subject of religion is that he believes in God and the Catholic Church. In my opinion, I think that the convent is foreshadowing of what is going to happen next.
